Digital Matte Paintings
Developed as a cinematic world-building study for a Ballard-esque super structure, the project explores how speculative architecture can be grounded in real locations and form a visually consistent world.
A 3D environment was used as the primary design foundation to ensure full control over all aspects of the design, accurate perspective and spatial continuity within the real-world site. This allowed the structure to be designed and evaluated as a single coherent system embedded in its geographic context.
Once established, the environment became an explorable digital backlot where camera positions, sequences and visual storytelling could be developed directly inside the world. The same production asset was then used to generate concept imagery, previs, digital matte paintings and final motion, demonstrating how a single design can support multiple stages of the filmmaking process.
Behind the Scenes
Designing the Architecture and Making the Film
The Brief

We love open briefs. Our agile workflow allows us to rapidly explore creative directions and pitch ideas until your vision is brought into perfect focus.
Concept Art
Every project begins with ideas.
Loose sketches are quickly developed into photographic concept art using Gen AI as a rendering tool. Rather than treating AI output as finished artwork, it becomes a fast way to explore form, materials, lighting and mood. The strongest ideas are refined through digital paint-overs, where the best elements from multiple iterations are combined into a single cohesive design.
By the end of this stage, the creative direction is established.

3D Environment Design
With the visual direction approved, the concept is translated into modular 3D components, using GenAI to accelerate the creation of a custom kitbash library. These are assembled inside a digital 3D model of the real-world location, allowing the architecture to be developed, tested and refined in context.
As the structure is entirely component-based, design changes remain fast and inexpensive while the creative direction is still evolving.
By the end of this stage, the architecture exists as a complete, coherent environment with accurate scale, perspective and spatial continuity.

3D Look Development
With the architecture established, the environment is imported into Unreal Engine to create a real-time digital backlot. Directors can explore the world on screen or in VR, evaluating camera positions, lighting and overall atmosphere as though walking through a physical film set.
This stage bridges production design and filmmaking. Camera moves, previs sequences and storytelling are developed directly inside the environment, allowing the creative team to refine ideas and evaluate the world in real time.

Digital Matte Painting
With the world fully designed and approved, our focus shifts to creating final cinematic imagery. The 3D environment provides the perfect foundation for high-resolution digital matte paintings, preserving accurate perspective, lighting and composition while allowing every shot to be finished with handcrafted detail.
This hybrid workflow combines the structural accuracy of 3D with the speed and artistic freedom of digital painting, delivering photoreal results without the time and expense of fully modelling every visible detail.
Motion
Final matte paintings are integrated with Unreal Engine animation and Gen AI tools to produce finished cinematic sequences. Depending on the project's scope, this can range from a single hero shot to a complete commercial or sequence for film and television.
Working from a storyboard or previs, the designed world is translated into cinematic motion as a production-ready piece.
